I’ve had a few times when one of my Captains spoke truth to power, advising me that the decision I made as police chief would not be the wisest one. And though my ego was bruised, I came to realize my mistake and change course. That Captain was a devout Catholic, and I could always count on him to tell it to me straight, and to exercise great wisdom. I guess he was my Daniel.
It’s a testimony to your leadership that a subordinate felt comfortable enough to speak truth to power — especially in an organization where rank equals power! When I was a young man, it was hard for me to accept the hard truth coming from a subordinate, but as I grew older (and somewhat wiser), I found great value in hearing them out.
