Have you ever stepped into a situation filled with uncertainty—maybe a new job, a difficult conversation, or a big decision—and wondered how it would turn out? Those moments remind us of a powerful truth woven throughout Scripture: God goes before us. He doesn’t just walk alongside us; He prepares the way ahead, ensuring we are never left to figure things out on our own.
Let’s look at a few biblical examples that show how God leads, protects, provides, and assures us of His presence.
God Goes Before Us to Guide Us
When Israel left Egypt, they were suddenly a nation on the move with no map and no experience leading themselves. Yet God didn’t leave them to wander in confusion.
- Exodus 13:21–22 says He went before them in a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. Imagine the reassurance of seeing God’s presence in the sky every single day, showing exactly when to move and when to stay.
- Jesus used the same imagery in John 10:3–4, describing Himself as the Good Shepherd who goes before His sheep. The flock doesn’t need to figure out where to go—they follow His voice.
Leadership Lesson: God’s guidance is clear when we learn to listen for His leading. As leaders, we don’t have to rely on our own wisdom alone; we can trust the Shepherd who knows the path.
God Goes Before Us to Protect Us
Crossing into the Promised Land was daunting. Israel faced giants, walled cities, and enemies who seemed impossible to defeat. But God reminded them in Deuteronomy 9:3 that He would go before them as a consuming fire, conquering what they could not.
- Later, at the Jordan River, the priests carried the ark of the covenant into the rushing waters first (Joshua 3:6–17). When their feet touched the river, the waters stopped flowing, and the entire nation walked across on dry ground. God had already cleared the way.
Leadership Lesson: Many obstacles we face are beyond our strength. But when God goes before us, He deals with opposition and makes a way forward we could never create ourselves.
God Goes Before Us to Provide for Us
Long before Jesus began His public ministry, God prepared the people by sending John the Baptist. Luke 1:76 describes John’s mission: to “go before the Lord to prepare the way for Him.” God ensured the hearts of many were ready to receive His Son.
- After the resurrection, God again went before His people. The angel told the women at the tomb that Jesus had already gone ahead into Galilee (Matthew 28:7; Mark 16:7). Before the disciples even arrived, provision was made for their meeting with Him.
Leadership Lesson: God is always arranging things in advance—people, opportunities, and resources—so His purposes succeed. Our job is to trust that He is working even when we can’t yet see the results.
God Goes Before Us with His Presence
Perhaps the greatest promise of all is found in Deuteronomy 31:8. As Moses prepared to hand leadership over to Joshua, he reminded Israel: “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Joshua could lead with courage because God’s presence was already ahead of him and with him in every step.
Leadership Lesson: God’s presence is the anchor that steadies us in every challenge. Leaders can walk forward with confidence not because the road is easy, but because God Himself has promised to go before and remain with us.
Conclusion: Leading with Confidence
Whether we face uncertainty, danger, need, or loneliness, Scripture reassures us again and again: God goes before us. He guides, protects, provides, and assures us of His presence.
As Christian leaders—whether in the workplace, the church, or the community—we can step into each day with confidence. We don’t walk into uncharted territory alone. The God who parted the seas, defeated nations, prepared hearts, and conquered death is the same God who goes before us today.
Action Steps for Leaders
If you want to lead with this truth in mind, here are some practical steps:
- Seek His guidance daily — Begin each day in prayer, asking God to show you His path.
- Move forward in faith — Don’t let fear of the unknown keep you from taking the next step.
- Trust His provision — Believe that God is already arranging what you’ll need tomorrow.
- Rest in His presence — Remind yourself often that God will never leave you or forsake you.
- Encourage others — Share these truths with your team or family so they too can walk confidently in God’s leadership.
